How to read your business electricity meter

For most businesses, reading electricity meters is a thing of the past! Most opt for smart electricity meters which does all the hard work for you by sending your meter readings directly to your supplier.

However, those who haven’t made the change yet will have one of the following electricity meters:

  • Single rate
  • Two-rate
  • Electronic
  • Dial rate

As a result, we have put together some information to help you read your business electricity meters.

Single rate

Single rate electricity meters are a small white meter that digitally displays one set of numbers.

You must read these numbers from left to right and write down the first five you see to get your reading and ignore any number past the decimal point or that may show in red.

Two-rate

This type of meter is very similar to the single-rate meter however the main difference between them is that the two-rate meter has 2 rows of numbers- it’s all in the name!

You must read these numbers from left to right and write down the first five you see for each row to get your reading and ignore any number past the decimal point or that may show in red.

Furthermore, when sending your readings to the supplier, remember to give 2 separate readings and to know which is which, to ensure you give the correct reading for the different meters.

Electronic

To read an electric meter simply press the blue button. This will display numbers. You must read these numbers from left to right and write down the first five you see to get your reading and ignore any number past the decimal point or that may show in red.

Dial Rate

Dial rate meters may look the most complicated, but they are simple to read. This type of meter is made up of 6 dials: 5 black and 1 red. To read this meter simply read the black dials from left to right and write down the number that each pointer is directed at and ignore the red dial. If you happen to have a dial pointing in between two numbers, write down the lowest of the two.
